Support and Extention

On May 6, Northern Gateway and the AEP Stewards filed a request to the National Energy Board to seek a three-year extension of the sunset clauses in Northern Gateway’s Certificates authorizing the project.

As part of the process, the NEB asked for letters of comment from Canadians. The response in support of the extension request was strong.

In total more than 217 letters of support from individuals, businesses, associations, municipalities and First Nation and Métis communities were filed. Their support shows that this project is about more than building a pipeline, it is about building opportunities and real economic benefits for all Canadians.

This includes:

  • 44 letters of support from Aboriginal communities
  • 29 municipalities and governments
  • 91 supportive businesses from BC, Alberta and Canada
  • 38 supportive individuals

Suspension of Request

As a result of the Federal Court of Appeal decision, the NEB has suspended the extension request process.

While the matter is remitted to the Federal Government for their redetermination, Northern Gateway will continue to further engage and build meaningful partnerships with First Nation and Métis communities.

The Aboriginal Equity Partners and our commercial project proponents are fully committed to building this critical Canadian infrastructure project while at the same time protecting the environment and the traditional way of life of First Nations and Métis peoples and communities along the project route.
